Trump-ysteria – the newest organizing tool?

February 22, 2017

OK, it’s not a word, yet. But this mass hysteria event that is the liberal reaction to President Trump’s desire to secure our borders may well deserve a word of its own.

Let’s see. What are some of the descriptions applied to him so far? He’s Hitler reincarnated.  He’s a Russian mole activated last year to destroy the world. He’s a mentally ill sociopath. He’s the earthly form of the Devil, in the true biblical sense of the word. He’s a war criminal.

And that doesn’t begin to cover all the alarmist hyperbole generated by his detractors.

This is the classic medical definition of a mass hysteria event as cited by Dictionary .com:

mass hysteria    n(oun).

  1. Spontaneous, en masse development of identical physical or emotional symptoms among a group of individuals, as in a classroom of schoolchildren.
  2. A socially contagious frenzy of irrational behavior in a group of people as a reaction to an event.

Is this a psychological phenomenon similar to the atmosphere that surrounded the European and Salem witch trials, or just a carefully crafted political strategy?

Certainly the irrational nature of some of the accusations would indicate some sort of nationwide imbalance, almost as though there has been some sort of psychotropic drug added to the water, or some similar sci-fi explanation.

Of course it could just be spoiled brat syndrome, with the triggering event being the election.

Whatever it is, it has huge numbers of people of the liberal bent freaking out, and an equally large number who simply think the country has lost its collective mind.

It doesn’t do any good whatsoever to try to try to reason logically with these folks.

For instance, take the border wall issue. Here’s one take on that.

One obvious way to stop the border wall is to make it unnecessary, i.e. for the number of river crossers and fence climbers to fall so low that it is not economically feasible to build it.

Mexico could do that tomorrow. That, not the recent election,  brings us to where we are today.

It’s patently obvious that Mexico turns a blind eye to the human river that floods the border, but why?

Well, ferrying people through Mexico is a pretty lucrative business. People who will talk tell stories of paying huge sums of money to coyotes employed by human smuggling enterprises just to get as far as the border.

While some people undoubtedly have the resources to pay cash, in some, maybe even in most cases they agree to work it off, and we are not talking about bagging groceries here.

We are talking about working in criminal enterprises as drug mules or packagers or as muscle for the cartels or in the sex trade or even just having to turn over substantial sums to get forged documents to work in legal occupations.

In short, some people in Mexico have an overriding profit motive in keeping the human river flowing freely.

Secondly, Mexico has a very high rate of poverty.  There is no reason for them to want to offer sanctuary to this transitory population. They can’t take adequate care of their own people, so why would they want to import more mouths to feed and clothe?

The thing is, you can point this all out, build the best researched case imaginable, and when you are all done presenting that case, the liberal you are trying to educate simply looks at you with a vacant stare and says you are a racist bigot.

That narrative goes back many decades. The sanctuary policy may have its original roots in legitimate human rights issues such as the sexual exploitation of women and even little girls working the streets of the larger cities.

It has long since lost that legitimate cover story among the political left. Now it’s about votes, not a sincere human desire to help.

In fact, it is likely that every time there is a push for open borders, it simply creates more stories of the most debased forms of human exploitation.

Then along comes Donald Trump to challenge the status quo.  It’s a lot harder to ignore the President of the United States than it is to call your neighbor names.

The result is that to stop the message you have to take away the messenger. The easiest way to do that is to make that messenger into a boogeyman.

The result?  Trumpysteria, also known among the Saul Alinsky crowd as a national organizing strategy.

Like the Salem witch hunts, eventually people start noticing they are being conned, and they decide to stop listening.

Before that happens you have a lot of dead and injured people whose lives can never be made whole again.

If you think the worst scams are Nigerian lottery callers, think again.  In fact,  just THINK.

If you don’t agree with the administration’s policies, make sure it’s because you can produce a logical, independently researched argument in support of that position.  Don’t just parrot what you hear or read.

You owe your country at least that much.
