Just the facts.

October 2, 2017

In the aftermath of the Las Vegas massacre, it would behoove us to use our ears and shut our mouths unless you were there and a witness.

The usual cackling crows won’t and aren’t  going to do that, but nothing says you have to listen.

This shooter is every law enforcement officer’s nightmare, because at this point he is apparently a blank, a law enforcement nonentity.

It won’t stay that way.  Someone knows about this man and investigators and forensics will flesh out the how.

That doesn’t mean we will ever know the why.

Lessons will be learned, lessons that might lead to better security.  Questions like should open air public venues have to provide multiple exits or should hotels have to install metal detectors or require bag searches will be asked and maybe answered. Discussions about whether the general tone of public discourse over the past few months played any role will happen.

For now, maybe the best thing we can hope for is that this doesn’t result in a wave of copycat incidents.

Sometimes you just have to recognize that really bad things can happen to good people.
