Is this 2017 America?

February 1, 2018

Church … family … police … military … the national anthem … Trump trying to call on all the tropes of 1950s-era nationalism. The goal of this speech appears to be to force the normalization of Trump on the terms of the bygone era his supporters are nostalgic for. #SOTU

FYI.

TROPE: noun

a : a word or expression used in a figurative sense : figure of speech

b : a common or overused theme or device : cliché:  the usual horror movie tropes

So to this…person, these themes are clichés or figures of speech.

In what addled and incoherent world are the signposts of ordinary civilized society equated with nationalism?

Apparently the world this…person lives in. A  world without a defining moral code, a world where children are conceived as and sometimes disposed of like unwanted kitchen trash or at best left to rear themselves, a world without safety or national pride.

This…person may represent that world, but it’s unlikely this…person speaks for the average American in any decade.

When people like this …person choose to willingly prostrate themselves on the altar of  nihilism, it behooves the rest of us to recognize their jealousy and their envy, as well as their underlying threat.

This…person is no credit to any gender, race or profession.

The values and mores this…person finds so contemptible are as alive and well in the America of 2017 as they were in 1950.

In fact, they are alive and well in any civilized society of the world.

That those values evoke such ire from this…person says far more about her and the future she desires for us than it does about America or Donald Trump.
